Did you shop for great deals on Black Friday or Cyber Monday? Or did you observe Buy Nothing Day?
Working in retail, I always ALWAYS work on Black Friday. It ends up working out fine for me, because my area of retail doesn't attract teh crazees! like the majority of retailers do. However, I needed a new digital camera because my two are old and/or of poor quality. So, I bought this camera from Circuit City on Black Friday. I lovelovelove Canon digital cameras, and am SUPER PUMPED for that thing to get here tomorrow. Whee!
Do you tend to like music in particular genres, or are your tastes all over the place? What are your most and least favorite musical genres?
I have pretty eclectic taste in music. (Par examplar.) The only genre I truly, seriously, undoubtedly hate is screamo. Pretty much anything that screams at me. That shit all makes me want to stab railroad spikes into my ears. Serious.
I listen to a LOT of "boys with guitars" music. Matt Nathanson, Blu Sanders, Griffin House, Ryan Adams, Stephen Kellogg (& the Sixers). I guess overall I listen to mostly singer-songwriter types. Not 'cuz I'm indie and above the law of pop culture/music, but because those guys write the songs that speak to my heart.
That said, my top five musicians/bands:
01. Matt Nathanson
02. Counting Crows
03. Lori McKenna
04. Dashboard Confessional
05. Garth Brooks
Oh, Garth Brooks. How I love you and your crazy pop country ass.
What's the story behind a time when you got locked out?
One time in high school my girlfriends and I went camping over spring break. Apparently in our heads we assumed that sunny and 60 in Denver meant all the snow had melted in all of the mountains in the entire state of Colorado, except the 14ers, which were nowhere near where we were going, anyway. Turns out.. not so much with the snow having melted. So while the campgrounds themselves were fairly clear of snow, anything beyond 50 yards of the campgrounds was buried in 3' snow drifts. It was cold, the girls had never really been camping, everyone was crabby because of the two aforementioned things, and on the second day I locked my keys in my truck. Our only option, since this is like 1997 and cell phones were not standard issue to teenagers, was to walk to one of the homes about a mile away from the campgrounds.
You know how in movies like Deliverance and Misery, all the crazies live in the mountains away from everyone? That is not unlike the mountains of Colorado. We walk the mile to the nearest house and in the barn as we're walking up to the house we see like eleven thousand broken down cars. We walk up to the door and three very angry, very loud, very big dogs charge it. Scared out of our minds, we knock. Surely the people are much nicer than the dogs. Surely these dogs are just mean all by themselves. No one answered.
Another half mile up the road we come upon another house with more broken down cars and another very big dog. Not so much did we bother going up to the house as much as we stole a hanger that had been converted into an antenna on one of the broken down cars. We bolted, completely fearful crazy mountain peoples were going to pursue us and we were going to rue the day we stole their rusty hanger out of their broken down old truck. The big dog followed us, seeming not at all inclined to encourage the fear we held in our hearts after our thievery. As a matter of fact, he followed us the 1-1/2 miles back to camp and hung out for a couple hours with us before deciding it was time to go back home and eat roadkill with his crazy mountain family, or something.
After two hours of hooking that fucking hanger through the door of my old Ford truck, I finally popped the lock. I am almost positive I have never been that happy in my life. I whooped and danced my way back to the campfire and my friends. "I FINALLY OPENED THE DOOR!"
"We want to go home."
Did you order Girl Scout cookies this year? What kind?
Samoas are my death cookies, seriously. I think I could eat them all day every day for weeks before I would get sick of them. But I am not such a fan of Girl Scouts. I dunno.. something to do with them being girls and wearing sashes and.. meh. It's just so tiring.
However, I am weak when it comes to cookies, so when I saw those little girls and their weird moms outside the local grocery store, I knew I was going to end up buying some. But having worked my ASS off to lose 20 lbs over the last year, I was not that excited about it. And then I saw my way out: SEND COOKIES TO THE TROOPS! So I bought three boxes of the non-chocolate varieties of Girl Scout Cookies [on account of how the chocolate melts, or something.] And I wrote on the little construction paper hearts that they give you. I hope the folks who get the cookies enjoy them, as I certainly am NOT.
I really hope they enjoy the sugar-free brownies. :P
What's one of your favorite quotes?
Submitted by Georgie-boy.
This is a difficult question to ask the dork with three handwritten FILLED quote books. But off the top of my head, and resounding in my life right now, are these two:
"Good timber does not grow with ease. The stronger the wind, the stronger the trees."
and
"...and if the world decides to catch up with me, it's a little victory." - -Matt Nathanson
They both inspire me, though in different ways. Any given day at work I can be heard reciting one or the other quietly to myself in an effort to not rip anyone's head off.
Have you ever played matchmaker? How did it go?
In college I introduced my BFF Amanda with a long-time friend of mine, John. At the time Amanda was in Grand Junction at college with me, and John was in Virginia, having just finished his college years. They hit it off immediately and within 3 months she was visiting him. Within 6 he was moving here. Within 2 years they were getting married. I signed the marriage certificate in Vegas as their witness. As far as I know, they're still together today.
I haven't talked to either of them in almost 3 years, but I'm okay with that if it means they're happy, in love, with the person they are meant to be with.
